In first grade, Ian played in the premiership sides of 1972-73 and 1974-75, and had a highest score of 63 not out against Bomaderry in 1979-80. He served as second grade captain, and there were grand finals in this division where he had a top score of 80 against Ulladulla United in 1990-91.

Ian led Ex-Servicemen to the third-grade premiership in 1988-89. During his years as captain of the club’s fourth grade side, he won the association’s Macey Award in 1984-85 and scored the team’s first and his only century – 102 not out against Albatross in 1985-86. Named that team’s player of the year, his season climaxed when he was awarded life membership at the 25th anniversary celebration.

When Ian finished his career with second grade in 1992-93, he had played 249 matches with the club. His 2803 runs were spread evenly over the four grades, while there were also 258 wickets and 138 catches.

Realising the need for sound administration, Ian had served the club as president, treasurer and delegate. He had also been active with the association, especially in the grading and protests and disputes committees, and he assisted with the centenary activities in 1992-93.

Ian’s involvement in the game was extended by some years as an umpire, when he was highly regarded for his rapport with players and good decision-making.
